This is a Color War talent show with five categories: vocal talent, instrumental talent, lip sync performance, original dance routine and dancing with the officers. Tonight’s EP’s were fantastic! Our first EP was Teen Idol.

It is very impressive to see what our campers are capable of accomplishing for their team! These games lasted almost 30 minutes, because the campers were so focused, attentive and listening so well that I could not get them out.

Today as a Green Giant, I coached the most intense game of Giant Says (Simon Says). There are events that require intelligence, problem solving, artistic talent, musical gifts, performance talent and even listening skills. But Color War is not all about athletic talent. These campers work so hard and pour their heart into each and every event. The athleticism and determination of our campers during Color War always amazes me. The race was close the entire time, and the Red Devils were slightly ahead until the half way mark and the White Knights caught up to lead their team to another victory. The Carolina Streak is a relay race all over camp with 12 campers from each team. We kept running at the Lower and Middle Pentathlon, at kickball and elephantball games, on the tennis court, at the flag football game and ended the daytime events with a running relay - the Carolina Streak. The runners were very close in time, but in the end the total team time victory went to the White Knights. Sunny skies and a cool breeze accompanied our eight runners, four from each team, as they battled a long and challenging event. The weather was absolutely perfect for a long run. When Camp Highlander relocated to the current campus, they renamed the run Old Forge, since that is the name of the mountain that is home to Camp Highlander today. This run at the old Camp Highlander, located in Highlands, NC, was called the Blue Valley Run. The archives of LIFE magazine also include color photos of London during the blitz, images taken by Hitler’s personal photographer Hugo Jaeger (who was a big fan of color photography) of the invasion of Poland and color images of the American military in action.Day two of Color War had us running all day! Today hosted one of the original events of Color War from 1964 and what we call today the Old Forge Run. Other caches of color photos have surfaced over the years, including staged propaganda images from the Office of War Information.
COLOR WAR 2 SERIES
In 2009, a popular documentary series called World War II in HD Colour included both color and colorized film of the war. The book isn’t the first attempt to showcase World War II in color. The book includes images from both the battle front, including bombers on runs over Germany and troops shooting artillery in Italy, as well as the home front like photos of factory workers building planes and Auxiliary Territorial Service members scanning the skies for enemy bombers. As the most destructive war in history gradually fades from living memory, it becomes more important to take away the remoteness and bring the Second World War to life.” “Black and white photography puts a barrier between the subject and the viewer, colour photography restores that missing clarity and impact. “The images in this book show the vivid hues of the flames and fabrics, the intense blue skies, the sun-tanned faces and the myriad of colours of military camouflage,” IWM senior curator Ian Carter says in a press release. Now, a collection of these rare photos, including some that have never been published before, appear in the The Second World War in Colour, curated by the Imperial War Museums, which is celebrating its centenary this year. But during World War II, the U.K.’s Ministry of Information took some 3,000 color photographs on the home front and the front lines using color film. Even then, for the next two decades color film was hard to use and expensive to process, limiting its use.

The development of photography cut through the mist of history, but it wasn’t until 1935 with the development of Kodachrome slide film that images went full spectrum. One of the things that turns many people off from history is the difficulty of placing themselves in the moment-it’s hard to imagine the emotion or brutality of Battle of Agincourt while struggling with Shakespearean language or Medieval renderings.
